What about Mike? Sir Charles on Monday Night and defending the Patriots Filming

Charles Barkley had me rolling Monday night with his commentary during the Redskins and Eagles game. I think Charles brought up a very good point when discussing the "Film-Gate" or whatever it is you want to call the filming of the Jets by Boston Bill and the Patriot Thrill. Baseball players steal signs (especially when on second base) and basketball players have a scout team play as if they are the upcoming opponent before the game, all to get into the heads of their opponents and try to predict what they will do. (I have even watched fighters in the UCF look up at the big-screen to see where their opponents faces are located when they have their bodies turned in order to punch their opponent in the face. So why is it so much of a disgrace when it happens in the NFL?

The Crap-Shoot and Why Quarterbacks yell out "Mike" to the offensive line
I know there are tons of variations of looks a defense can give, but then again, there are only so many they can show. So knowing some of these signs (because just as in other sports they change each game, each play, etc) and trying to predict what the team will do after you see the aforementioned sign, is still a crap shoot. Just because there are a million variations of 5 numbers plus a power-ball doesn't mean that I can watch the picks of lotto numbers on television and then walk into Habeeb's two days later and pick the digits that will make a millionaire. (But if you happen to know the patterns or sequence feel free to e-mail me @ thebushidoway.blogspot.com-what? I will use my new found riches for good and not glory. Plus, you would get a helluva lot more interesting reporting from a reader's stand-point.) Now, I am not saying that football players are not intelligent people, but science is on my side for this one, there is only so much the human brain can process and retain.

And there is a reason diligent and productive quarter-backs such as Tom Brady call out "Mike" while on the line before the snap. "Mike" in football jargon is the middle-linebacker. "Will" (no-offense to the Glassman) is the weak-side and "Sam" is the strong side of the defensive line-up, which changes each play and that is why QBs have to yell out a different number for "Mike" each play. You still have to do your homework and dissect each play or defensive-look the other team is giving you, would videotape help this? I don't think so, then again, if QBs start having "live-video-streaming" into their helmets then we might want to become concerned.

Then again, perhaps the NFL is pulling a distraction just like the guy in the photo by getting everyone to look in the Patriots camera hand to keep people from noticing that the League and former players are on Capitol Hill to testify that a $9 billion corporation is not paying former players their pensions or their medical bills for those who gave up their bodies on the grid-iron. Can't get enough of Sir Charles? Listen to what he has to say about the Citadel and women in the military! I love this clip.

If it wasn't an unfair advantage, it wouldn't be illegal!

Last year I bitched A LOT about the celebrity guests they kept putting in the booth during MNF, allowing them to talk about everything but the game. But I agree with you: Barkley was interesting, funny and insightful, all without trying to act all self-important.

Love the guy.
